  4. It is important to evert the 
  5. upper lid and examine the 
  6. palpebral conjunctiva for 
  7. papillae, cysts, concretions, 
  8. foreign bodies, irritation or 
  9. other anomalies.  With the 
  10. patient in the head rest, 
  11. have the patient look down 
  12. and grasp the upper lid 
  13. margin over the lashes.  With 
  14. a cotton-tipped applicator 
  15. or other stylus placed at the 
  16. upper lid sulcus (just above 
  17. the tarsal plate) lift the lid up 
  18. and evert it over the stylus.
